Column #58 - Published June 5, 2002

44 Years Later ...
... It Was BENNY JOY!!!

It was 1958 or 1959, and I was wearing my first pair of LEE RIDERS blue jeans, authentic American cowboy pants, faded in all the right spots, and the cuffs turned up high.

I already owned 45rpm and 78rpm platters by Elvis, Bill Haley & The Comets, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent. Little Richard, etc., but I had not yet been to a Rock'n'Roll concert, that is, not until an all-star review of American artists came to Como for a concert at the Politeama Theatre.

The concert had a good mix of acts: the Doo Wop group, the middle-aged bright shouldered band leader with his white sportcoat, and, what impressed me the most, a crazed Rock'n'Roll kid with greasy hair, rubber legs, and wild outrageous stage act.

Even though this crazed Rock'n'Roll kid made a deep lasting impression on me, for some strange reason, which I could never quite explain to myself, I never knew his name, nor the names of any of the other acts on the bill.

Years passed, and I fondly remembered my first Rock'n'Roll concert, especially the wild Rockabilly cat with the flamboyant clothes, the intense vocal style, and the high charged stage show.

Often over the years I wondered who was he. I will never find out. Maybe this whole concert was a fiction of my overly fertile youthful imagination. Maybe it never happened, maybe I just dreamed it up! It if it was a real concert, why would I not know the names of at least some of the artists?

Mmmmmmh, strange, the whole thing is strange.

Ten years go by, twenty years, thirty years, forty years go by, and I still have fond memories of my first Rock'n'Roll concert. A fiction? No sir, it could not have been!!

During the last 10 years or so I start seeing the classic photo of Benny Joy in the various Rock'n'Roll magazines and on the Internet, and while something is bugging me about that photo, I still miss connecting the dots.

Finally, in the last few weeks, I read on the Internet that Benny Joy toured Europe, including COMO, Italy!!!

That's IT!! I finally got IT!! It was BENNY JOY who I had seen in concert 42 years ago in Como!! After 42 years of wondering, the Internet finally came to the rescue!

Some of the other acts touring Italy with Benny were: The Platters, Ray Scott, The Fraternity Brothers, The Flairs, Big John Taylor, Linda Hayes, Johnny Mangano & The Blockbusters.
