WHAT'S NEW IN CENTRAL EUROPE?

By Chris Ebner

October/November 1999

Being a newcomer to the Internet I looked for and found the homepage of the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame. Just great! After contacting Bob I decided to contribute with regular columns about the scene in mid-Europe, mostly Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Collecting Rock'n'Roll, Rhythm and Blues and Rockabilly since the early 60's, I'm a staff member of the German mag ROCKIN' FIFTIES of Munich. Some years ago I ran the official Sun Rhythm Section and Sonny Burgess Fan Club, being a good friend of Sonny and D.J.Fontana, who were so kind as to play at my 50th birthday party. In the last 23 years I have met many of our stars in person and interviewed them. I work closely with Bernd Hermoneit from Berlin, who writes very detailed articles about our music, Werner Oschmann of Vienna, the city with the greatest scene I know, and Charles White, the famous Dr. Rock from Scarborough, England. I have many other personal contacts and so it should be easy to present interesting news to you.

To begin this column, here's a nice unknown pic of yesterday with Larry Donn, Sonny Burgess, Narvel Felts and Billy Lee Riley, all in a row...

IS OUR SCENE STILL LIVING?

STOMPIN‘ NEWS reports in its latest edition about the disbanding of some Rock’n’Roll groups in Central Europe. Right they are, I think. Rusti Steel and Tin Tax, Ike & The Capers, All Willis & The Swingsters aren’t existing any more. So did the very fine Brewsters and many others. Looking into the scene since long as fan, manager and promoter, here’s my opinion about it:

First of all we need reliable managers and – most of all – promoters. There have been too many disappointments for the fans, who went to shows. For instance: Many fans would like to have Marvin Rainwater over here. Where could he play? What's realistic? Going from north to south – the Hamburg area, nothing, no one. In the Bremen area only one, the Music Hall in Worpswede. Hannover, o.k., the "Nashville Club". But then: The big centers Ruhr, Berlin, Rhein/Main, nothing. Imagine: 20 million people living there, and no hope for a decent show of the music we like so much. Maybe Freiburg one and Munich one, with the help of Klaus Kettner. Vienna: The Star-Club, Switzerland maybe the Albisguetli people and Basel. That's five or six, and that's all. There are some smaller places like Bielefeld, but that's mostly exclusively good for the neo-rockabilly groups, no chance for historical stars. And all of them organizers will not and can not pay enough money for the bands. The small bands have to starve or pay everything out of their own pocket. In case they can not afford that, like Ike & The Capers, whom I knew and whose music I loved, they have to disband.

For me, there should be a much better coordination between the few, who are working steadily and reliable. Why not organizing a meeting of them all for let’s say two days at a central point to form a chain of them, to get contacts with sponsors, to cooperate and to organize tours? The biggest company dealing with Rock'n'Roll in our part of the world, Bear Family Records, isn't interested in organizing concerts. But who could take the first initiative? Frankly, I don't know. Anyone in the big German speaking community, who knows it better? Would be great, you know my address...

THE JERRY LEE LEWIS SITES BY THOMAS SOBCZAK – JUST GREAT!

Thomas, living near Hamburg, is the German representant of the International Jerry Lee Lewis Fan Club. He runs an own website about the killer, which is just great. You gotta look to his report about German Fan Kai Goeing, Germany's own Andy Lee and his father and manager Reinhart Grunwald visiting a killer-show in Mississippi at the beginning of this month (Tunica, MS, 10-8-99). Anyone interested in the Ferriday Fireball should go to www.jllfan.de/hellhoun.html with lotsa information an brand new pics. The front page of Thomas goes by the name of www.jllfan.de/jerry.html . That's what I call quality, friends!

All for now. Would be great, if you would write, phone or mail your comments.

Vaya Con Dios !
