posted Jan 1, 2000 - The end of the century will be finishing with feeble Robbie Williams and sadly not Larry Williams. All the modern music critics confirm this year as the worst ever in popular music. I wish a few of them would come to Hemsby and find out the best of 'what it used to be' is still there and also learn what it's all about. It all began with Enrico Caruso, the great Neapolitan tenor, the first real star of recorded music. His 'Vesti la Guibba' went gold and sold a million copies. In the 50's Larry Williams also went gold 3 times and I definitely liked his style and music a lot more!
'The October Hemsby 23 Weekender ended the century in style' -- The October Hemsby 23 Weekender ended the century in style and a good time was had by all. The attendance was as expected, with exactly the same numbers as the October 1998 Weekender.
The new refurbished 'Hemsby Holiday Centre' is 20% LARGER and three venues appear to be too much for October, but they are not sufficient for the May Weekender! Pontins with no great wisdom, tell me we have too many people with one breath and not enough with the next! But don't start worrying I am currently booking bands for Hemsby 27, that's October 2001 assuring you of Hemsby's future.
'Hardened purists admitted they played very well...' -- My warm congratulations to Jack Earls and Marvin Rainwater for their outstanding shows and a very fine performance from Riley McOwen's, superb Sleazy Rustic Boys and the much rehearsed and fully prepared six piece Hemsby House Band. They were both just great. It was also a pleasure to hear the young Rock-a-Beats were so well accepted by the knowledgeable Hemsby crowd.
Hardened purists admitted they played very well and maybe on a smaller scale the future doesn't look so bad as they will undoubtedly attract a badly needed new younger crowd to the Rockin' scene.
Here's one for the guys! We intend to restart a Miss Hemsby Bikini/swimsuit contest next May. So girls bring your polka dot bikinis and win a free Hemsby Weekender for two. I suppose I'll have to just put up with it and be the sole judge once again! Also, we are re-introducing a five- a-side soccer competition and I wonder if the reception girls will be entering a team? The Team Captains should register with Tony Thorpe at 12.15 on the Friday and Saturday in the main restaurant. We will be introducing new ID's in future and doing away with the old pass cards. These will be in the form of wristbands. This will be easier for identity and our security to check. Much better than having to dig out your card all the time and then remembering you left it in your chalet.
'We have already sold more advance tickets at this stage than ever before.' -- The next Hemsby Weekender, No. 24, from May 10th to the 15th May 2000, has in my opinion the strongest line up ever and certainly the most expensive ever booked. I strongly advise you to book now.
Remember last May was sold out and the notices went up. Believe me, we have already sold more advance tickets at this stage than ever before.
My congratulations to Top DJ. Wild Cat Pete, who inspired his crowd to another Hemsby first, dancing on the tables! This has only ever been done before during a live performance from American group, Speedo and the Cadillacs many years ago.
Our congratulations also to 'Wild Cat Pete' for being nominated for entry into 'The Guinness Book of Records' as the longest playing DJ of Rock 'n' Roll - nominated by DJ. Big Beat Kris, Good Luck from us all!
I leave you with a little controversy and item to discuss, namely, which were the most memorable and disappointing performances during the past 50 years of Rock 'n' Roll?
I have been attending shows since the mid - fifties and there are many I wish I had not missed, but of the hundreds I have been to, here are my choices:
The best Rock 'n 'Roll Show of the Millennium: Jerry Lee Lewis and the Echoes at Mitcham Majestic 1962
Best performance of the year (a tie between) Jack Earls and The Sleazy Rustic Boys, Narvel Felts and the Rimshots, both Hemsby 1999.
Band of the Year: The Treniers
Most disappointing performances of the year The Crickets at the Town House, Enfield 1999.
I would be most interested to hear the shows you rate as the best and worst, so drop me a line.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in May, if not before, and thanks for all your support and good wishes. We try hard to be the best. Also a very special thank you to all the hard working Rock 'n' Roll Weekenders team.
As Willie said a big thank you for your support during this last century, hope that you will be Rockin' into 2000 with the Hemsby Rock 'n' Roll Team - remember we could not do it without you.
